High Potential Individual

Overview Of The High Potential Individual Visa

The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is an unsponsored work route for recent graduates of eligible international universities. It allows individuals to come to the UK to work, be self-employed or look for work without needing a job offer or sponsor.

The route is points-based and requires a qualifying degree from a university on the Global Universities List, awarded within a specified period before the application.

Main Requirements

To qualify for an HPI visa, an applicant must show that:

  • They are aged 18 or over.
  • They have been awarded a degree-level qualification (bachelor’s, master’s or PhD) from a university on the Global Universities List.
  • The qualification was awarded within the last five years (or as specified in the rules).
  • The qualification is verified as equivalent to a UK degree.
  • They meet the English language requirement.
  • They meet the financial requirement, unless exempt.

No job offer or sponsorship is required.

Global Universities List

Eligibility depends on the university appearing on the Global Universities List published by the Home Office. The list is updated annually and is based on global ranking tables.

Applicants must ensure that:

  • Their university appears on the list covering the date their qualification was awarded.
  • Their degree meets the level and timing requirements in the Immigration Rules.

Length And Conditions Of Stay

HPI permission is normally granted for:

  • Two years for most degree-level qualifications.
  • Three years for PhD or other doctoral-level qualifications.

During their stay, HPI visa holders can:

  • Work in most roles.
  • Be self-employed.
  • Undertake voluntary work.
  • Study, subject to any ATAS requirements.

They cannot work as a professional sportsperson. The route is not extendable and does not lead directly to Settlement.

Switching To Other Routes

Before their HPI permission expires, individuals may be able to switch into another immigration category from within the UK, such as:

Eligibility will depend on the requirements of the new route.

Dependants

Partners and dependent children can apply to join or accompany an HPI visa holder, provided they meet the relevant immigration requirements. Dependants may be able to work in the UK.
